Syed Rahim Nabi is an Indian footballer who joined Mohun Bagan during the 2011-12 season as a midfielder. With immense experience of playing at the international level, Nabi is one of the senior players in the squad.
Hailing from Pandua, West Bengal, Nabi had to struggle a lot in the early years. He would take the first local in the morning to come to Kolkata for his training sessions. He dreamt of playing for the Bengal (state) team like his brother Syed Ali Nabi. Back then, he says, playing for Bengal was more important than playing for India and he was very eager to play for Bengal. He was the youngest in the family and they supported him throughout his tough times.
When Nabi came to play for Bengal, he did not know that to play for the Bengal team, it is very important to have have had a brush with club football in Kolkata. After giving his best at the selections, Nabi was chosen to play for Bengal. Soon he was making news. At a tournament in Delhi, Nabi was the top scorer and was soon called to Jamshedpur to play the U-16 Asian qualifiers.
After an impressive tournament, Nabi was soon a part of the Tata Football Academy and trained there for two years. After that he joined Mohammedan Sporting and played under Habib Sir for 2 years. Kingfisher East Bengal, then came knocking. After spending 7 years at the club, he would move on to the other side of Kolkata - chez McDowell Mohun Bagan.
Nabi says that he initially felt that Mohun Bagan supporters might doubt his loyalty because of his history with Kingfisher East Bengal and winning against them on two occasions this season was a delight as it helped convince many people that his loyalty is pledged to McDowell Mohun Bagan.
" Football is not an easy game. To become a good player, one has to put in a lot of hard work and be honest. They have to be honest with their performance on the field. If they do these things, they will definitely succeed. "
Nabi likes fishing. There are two ponds near his house and he says he can literally fish out of his window. He also likes to spend time with his family and play carrom.
