Nirmal Chettri felicitated in Kalimpong
8-Jun, 2012
New recruit of McDowell Mohun Bagan, Nirmal Chettri was felicitated by Share FC of Kalimpong during the Fund Raising match between Hill All Stars and Share FC. They have been felicitated because of their successful football career so far.
The Hill All Stars took on local side Share FC on June 2 in Kalimpong to raise funds for Share FC. Nirmal Chetri and Sanju Pradhan, who also was felicitated, took part in the match for the Hill All Stars team.
The funds generated from the match will be used for the development of football in the Hills, especially for the development of local Kalimpong club Share FC, which was formed only 1 year back, and created history for football in the Hills when a month back they offered legal contracts to all its players as the first club in the region.
Congrats Nirmal on being felicitated. What is your reaction?
Nirmal: Thanks a lot. It definitely gives a lot of satisfaction. Also, it gives extra motivation to continue playing good football in future also.
There are a lot of talented footballers in the Hills, hope in future more players from our region will play successfully in various clubs of Indian football.
How are you enjoying the holidays?
Nirmal: I am enjoying my holidays at the fullest. This is the only time in the year when I get opportunity to spend quality time with my family, so I am very happy to be with them.
Who do you think will win this year's Euro Cup? Which team you will be supporting in this year's Euro Cup?
Nirmal: I think this Euro Cup will be very tough and it is difficult to predict the winners. Football also has become a bit unpredictable these days. I think Germany will win the Euro Cup though I will be supporting England.
Though Bayern Munich dominated the UEFA Champions League final match, were you happy with Chelsea's tactical defensive football that helped them to lift the UEFA Champions league or would you call it a lucky win?
Nirmal: Winning the tournament matters, how you win is not important. See, whoever plays better or who has more ball possession in the match doesn't matter anymore in modern football, but simply you need to win trophies and that's exactly what Chelsea did in the UEFA Champions League Final.
No, I don't call it a lucky win because they defended very well in the Final and capitalise on the chances that came their way. In fact, they played like this in many matches of the tournament and at the end they proved everyone wrong!

As a footballer, what do you try to learn from these International tournaments?
Nirmal: Every footballer get chance to learn while watching superstars of World Football in action. I think learning process never ends for a footballer even after you retire from football.
I simply try to adapt their tactical moves and sometimes their skills and commitment!
Do you follow any training regimen in the off-season to keep yourself fit?
Nirmal: Yes, I'm working on my fitness. This is the time every footballer must concentrate more and should work hard. After season starts, we will be practicing every day, but to keep working in this off season is very important. If I can't work out every day, I feel very uncomfortable. Sometimes I make plans and travel to my academy for training and often I work out with my local lads at home also.
Have you set any target for yourself in the coming season?
Nirmal: Of course, every individual make their graph before the season kicks off. I'm praying to God that I should not get injured, that is my first target, after that success will automatically follow if I keep working hard.
My next target will be to win the first tournament of the season for McDowell Mohun Bagan. Having a good start to the season is very important.
Are you planning to go anywhere in this 2 month vacation?
Nirmal: I haven't yet planned but I'm working on this with my childhood friends. At this moment, I'm busy promoting football in the Hills with various Clubs.
Let's see if I get more time, then definitely I'll go for a vacation somewhere outside India for a week.
Thank you Nirmal, enjoy the vacation.
Nirmal: Thanks a lot.
