McDowell Mohun Bagan has roped in midfielder Tirthankar Sarkar in their squad for the 2014-15 season. He is the product of Mohun Bagan SAIL Football Academy, Durgapur. Tirthankar was part of the Academy team that participated in the Manchester United Premier Cup and played in the final round held at Manchester. He also went to 3 overseas tours for Mohun Bagan SAIL Football Academy, to Singapore, Thailand and England.

After passing out from Mohun Bagan SAIL Football Academy, Tirthankar has played for Salgaocar (2009) and Indian Arrows (2010 2013). A natural left-footed player, Tirthankar has played as the left half, right half as well as an attacking midfielder in his football career.

After joining McDowell Mohun Bagan, Tirthankar said, "This will be my first season in a big club like Mohun Bagan, so I am obviously very excited. I don't think there will be a lot of pressure on me, as I have the experience of playing International games, having represented India in various age groups."

He also said, "I am also looking forward to be playing under the coaching of Subhash Bhowmick who has vast experience in Indian football. In fact, I have heard a lot about him from my parents and uncles, who have watched Subhash Sir both as a player as well as a Coach. He is a very good human being and I am sure this season will be a great learning experience for me."

Born on July 1, 1993, Tirthankar has represented India in U-13, U-14, U-16, U-17, U-19, U-21, U-22 as well as U-23 team. According to Tirthankar, the turning point of his career has been the AFC U-16 qualifiers where he played under the managership of Collin Toal against teams like Iraq, Saudi Arab, Bhutan etc. In that tournament, he did play in both left and right half position.

Tirthankar chose the 2-0 win against Dempo few seasons back to be the best game of his career. He has played with Pritam Kotal and Shouvik Ghosh for few seasons in Indian Arrows. Tirthankar has also represented India together with both Shouvik Ghosh (U-19, U-22, and U-23) and Pritam Kotal (U-19 and U-22).

According to Tirthankar, 2 of his favourite goals are against USA in a friendly match (left footed in-swing shot and left footed volley), while in the club level a couple of goals against Shillong Lajong (Indian Arrows - left footed direct free-kick) and United Sikkim (late equalizer - left-footed slice) are special.

A set-piece movement specialist, he used to take most of the corner-kicks and free kicks while playing for Pailan Arrows. Tirthankar's favourite players are Renedy Singh, Ronaldinho and Lionel Messi. Though he will be supporting Spain in the FIFA World Cup, he would also be happy if Argentina clinch the title since he is a big fan of Lionel Messi. He also supports Barcelona among the European clubs.
