MB Day celebrated ; Ratna to be conferred upon M.A. Sattar
29-Jul, 2008
Kolkata , 29-Jul, 2008 :
MB Day celebrated with grandeur; it has been 119 years since Mohun Bagan Athletic Club has emerged as an icon of supreme devotion towards the nation. McDowell Mohun Bagan has glorified its own history by making achievements which not only quantize its green and maroon hues but the tri-colour as a whole. Such an impeccable incident was the victory of IFA Shield on 29th July, 1911. To salute the spirit of the “Immortal XIâ€, the day has been celebrated as Mohun Bagan Day. It was slightly an off-coloured celebration due to the unexpected defeat over Mohammedan Sporting Club just the day before but still hordes had gathered on that occasion. The proceedings started with the Mohun Bagan U-13 squad facing-off the Veterans Sports Club U-13. It was a tough clash; both the teams put their strengths to win it, but ironically the match ended 1-1.
Later on, the U-13 squad was felicitated for their victory at the all-India level and wished their success for the upcoming Paris tour. There were two more friendly matches involving the ex-players, Artistes' Forum of Kolkata and the Calcutta Sports Journalists Club.
Finally the moment came when the Mohun Bagan Ratna Award was conferred upon M.A. Sattar. On behalf of Baichung Bhutia, who was recently presented with the Padma Shri, Madhuri Tipnis, his better half, collected the memento from Hon. Joint Secretary Mr. Anjan Mitra.
There was a notable attendance of great players of past like Chuni Goswami, Sanath Seth, Sahu Mewala, P. Kannan, Shibaji Banerjee, Compton Dutta Sisir Ghosh, Krishnendu Roy, Sisir Ghosh, Subrata Bhattacharya and many more.
