M.A. Sattar to receive the 2008 M.B. Ratna

M.A. Sattar, ex-Olympian and captain of the Mohun Bagan team in 1956, has been selected for the prestigious Mohun Bagan Ratna this year. He will be honoured on the 29th of July - Mohun Bagan Day - this year.
Born in Bangalore, in the year 1925, he graduated from Mysore University. Initially, in 1944, he played for the Bangalore Muslim Club in the right-in position..




Career in IFA Kolkata League:


(a) 1949 - He joined Mohammedan Sporting Club.


(b) 1950 - 1958 - He played for Mohunbagan Club.


(c) 1953,1955,1956 -He was captain of Mohunbagan Club.

Achievements with the Indian national team


1941,1951,1953,1955 : He was a regular player of Bengal team that won the prestegious Santosh Trophy Tournament.




He was an indispensable member of the Indian National Football Team, that won the Gold In Asian Games(1951 at Delhi). In 1952, he was a member of Indian National Football Team in Helsinki Olympic. In the years 1952 and 1954, India were crowned champions at the Quadrangular Football Competition where India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Burma participated. In both the competitions, Sattar played pivotal roles to help India win. He was equally skilful in the right in and left in positions.
