Coach's Corner
Subrata Bhattacharya
Technical Director

Injuries can never put us down.
Subrata Bhattacharya is the current Technical Director of McDowell Mohun Bagan. Along with the team coach Prasanta Banerjee, he presides over and strategizes the game plan for the Mariners in their matches.
After enjoying a glorious career as a defender for the McDowell Mohun Bagan of the 70s-80s as well as the Indian national team, he came back to the Green and Maroon outfit in 2000, this time as a coach. His attempt at strengthening the team’s defense section, by changing the formation to 5-3-2, helped him clinch a few titles for the club. His return, once again, at McDowell Mohun Bagan helped restore a lot of confidence in the players who were baffled by ex-coach Steve Darby’s ouster.

Prasanta Banerjee
Chief Coach

Players must not feel complacent after successive wins.
In the mid-60s, a boy, fondly named Bhomla, showed signs of a promising football career on the streets of Rasbihari, Kolkata. Getting zapped by the footie fever at a very young age, he continued his passion throughout his school and college, strengthening his defensive skills. His journey from local outfit Morning Star Club to coaching the Mariners a few decades later, is what defined Prasanta Banerjee.
The man of the hour, who is now an integral part of McDowell Mohun Bagan, began a modest career in football. He is one of the few players to have spent time with both East Bengal as well as Mohun Bagan as a prolific defender. Success at the national level did not elude him either – he had captained the Indian football team in the 80s as well as the Bengal state team in the 70s and 80s to several victorious moments. It was this golden patch that was to give a boost to his coaching career.
A thorough professional, after having obtained the Coaching License – Grades A,B,C – under AFC, he also completed the FIFA Instructor Course. After having seized the opportunity to coach the Bengal team in Santosh Trophy, Port Trust FC and Aryan Club, 2011 saw him finally wear the Green and Maroon colours. His inclusion has very prominently been reflected on the fitness levels and performance of the McDowell Mohun Bagan players, this season.
