MOHUN BAGAN BEAT WEST BENGAL POLICE 2-1

Mohun Bagan beat West Bengal Police 2-1 in a Kolkata Premier League match played in Salt Lake Stadium today. In another match, Chirag beat Kalighat Club 3-0. This means Mohun Bagan will have to beat Chirag United in the last match to be played on 25th May to retain Kolkata Premier League. A draw in that match will see Chirag being crowned champions.
Suraj Mandal and Sueoka scored the goals for Mohun Bagan.
Mohun Bagan coach Biswajit made lot of changes in the first XI compared to the last match. There were many players with one yellow card, he did not want use them in the first team. He used only 5 players in the starting lineup whom he had used against East Bengal, they included Ishfaq, Dipak, Azim, Mohanraj and Masih.
Mohun Bagan used new set of players in the midfield and striking force and players took time to settle down. West Bengal players made a good start and made some good moves in the early part of the match. They scored the first goal through Kishore Mallick in the 11th minute. He got a through pass from midfield, and he made a good down the middle run past Dipak and Azim, then nicely placed the goal inside goal past onrushing Chirodeep, who made his debut for Mohun Bagan today.
Mohun Bagan equalized in the next minute itself. Mohanraj sent a long ball from midfield. Suraj brilliantly chest trapped the ball, went past his marker and then from close range took a left footed shot that went to back of the net past diving goalkeeper.
Overall performance of Mariners was not satisfactory today. Though they made many attacks but very few chances were created. Around the 30th minute, Ishfaq fumbled a bit when he got a ball in an advantageous position inside the box. 5 minutes before half time, Biswajit switched flanks of Santa Kumar and Subhojit and within minutes, Subhojit sent a very good cross from left flank but defence was alert to clear the ball.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Police attempted few moves and Farbesh took a good long ranger shot which beat Chirodeep and narrowly missed the target.
At the stroke of half time, Mohun Bagan was denied a certain penalty when Suraj was pushed from behind inside Police penalty box. Only Suraj Mandal looked positive in the first half and he tried a lot to score but lacked support from other players.
In the 46th minute after the lemon break, Biswajit brought in James in place of Subho Kumar and few minutes later brought in Sueoka in place of Santa Kumar. Introduction of James and Sueoka brought much stability in the Mohun Bagan midfield and they looked much positive in the 2nd half. Sueoka in particular looked very dangerous and his inclusion helped Mohun Bagan to pile pressure on Police defence. James played in central midfield and performed much better than what Subho Kumar did.
In the 65th minute, Ishfaq played a one-to-one with Suraj and then from handshaking distance took a shot which hit opponent goalkeeper and went out. This was perhaps the easiest chance of the match wasted by Ishfaq.
Snehasish replaced Suraj in the 74th minute. Ishfaq and Snehasish combined well in the 79th minute and from the latter's cross, Subhojit could not trap the ball properly, thus wasting a very easy chance. In the very next minute, Sueoka gave a good pass to Subhojit whose cross again was misdirected and went out.
Ultimately Mohun Bagan scored the winning goal in the 85th minute. It resulted from a brilliant play by Azim. He showed excellent skill as he went past 2 players in opponent box and then sent a low cross, Sueoka just had to stretch his leg and push the ball inside empty goal which he did without making any mistake.
Mohun Bagan tried to score few more goals but could not penetrate much into Police defence during injury time. Subhojit was declared Man of the Match, which was a surprising decision. It could have gone to Azim or Sueoka.
Mohun Bagan will next meet Chirag in the last match of Kolkata League on 25th May. This is a must win match for Mariners to win Kolkata League.
