MOHUN BAGAN HOLD BY ARCH RIVALS TO A GOALLESS DRAW
|
|
Kolkata,
24-Apr, 2010:
Mohun Bagan lost 2 vital points against East Bengal today in Kolkata Premier Division League, as the match ended in a goalless draw.
Mohun Bagan played defensive football in first half and allowed the opponents to attack more. Shilton played brillianly and kept the scoreline 0-0 at half time. However, in 2nd half, Mariners came out of the shell and came close to scoring few times. East Bengal goalkeeper Gurprit made few good saves to deny Mariners from scoring.
Coach Biswajit put Subhojit in the first team as U-19 player. After recovering from injury, this was his first match after about three months, but he failed to impress and was a nonperformer from the start of the match. He had to be replaced by Souvik in the 31st minute.
East Bengal made few good moves in the first half and came close to scoring a couple of times. Shilton was superb under the bar throughout the match. Mohun Bagan hardly made any positive move before lemon break and allowed opponents to dominate over them.
Souvik, who came as a replacement, played well along with Sueoka in midfield. Micky who tried a lot, could not play to his potential and failed in his role as snatcher in the midfield. Even Snehasish looked a bit subdued today in the left flank. Sueoka, however, played his heart out, especially in 2nd half.
Mohun Bagan missed James Singh. In the last match, James and Surkumar combination caused panic in Mahindra defence in 2nd half, and it would have been better if James was put in the starting lineup, or at least he could have been brought as replacement.
Barreto and Chidi were heavily marked and did not get any supply from midfield in 1st half. In 2nd half, they tried to score but luck was not in favour of Mariners today. Barreto took a stunning diving head that narrowly missed the target, and Chidi got past his marker inside the opponent box and unleashed a right footed shot which went over the crossbar. Both of them also took few good shots which, however, failed to beat goalkeeper.
Coach Biswajit brought in Masih in place of Micky in 2nd half, which stablized the midfield and Mariners launched a series of attacks after this change.
Surkumar made a darting run, cut in and took a longer ranger shot which Gurpreet made a valiant save diving to his right. East Bengal custodian also denied Sueoka from scoring as the latter's head was going in when Gurpreet again dived to his right and made a good collection.
East Bengal's Khabra was rightly shown red card in the 73rd minute for a nasty foul on Snehasish. Few minutes later, Mehtab was lucky not to be shown red card as he kicked the ball towards linesman and showed indecency.
Ishfaq came as a replacement in the injury time in place of Snehasish. This replacement could have been done much earlier. Like last match, coach Biswajit today also said, "I should have brought in Ishfaq earlier, as there was a gap in the opponent's right back position. I thought referee would be giving much more injury time."
Sonju Pradhan was adjudged Man of the Match.
Mohun Bagan now has 33 points from 13 matches and has 2 matches left in Kolkata League. The match against Chirag United will almost be the final match for Mariners, as they will have to beat the opponents to win Kolkata Premier League.
Mohun Bagan will play their next match on 28th April, which will be a I league match against league leaders Dempo Sports Club. The match will be held in Salt Lake Stadium at 5 p.m.
