MARINERS TROUNCE MAHINDRA 3-1 IN I LEAGUE

Mohun Bagan today beat Mahindra United 3-1 in an I league match held in Salt Lake Stadium. Chidi, Sueoka and Snehasish scored the goals for Mariners. After this win, Mohun Bagan now has 32 points from 21 matches and are now in the 3rd position in I league table.
Poor refereeing could not stop Mohun Bagan from winning today. Referee Suresh made error of judgment quite a few times in today's match. The
penalty which Mahindra got, from which they equalized, resulted from a clear dive by Rafi, whereas Mohun Bagan was denied a clear penalty. Sueoka was brought down inside the box and referee completely ignored the incident.
Coach Biswajit brought in Surkumar and Snehasish in the first XI in place of Zenith and injured Ishfaq. The visitors made a great start and within 2 minutes, Mariners had a lucky escape twice. First time, Manju made a stunning goal line save by heading the ball out and from corner Mijin's effort went out from close range.
Mohun Bagan slowly started controlling the game and few minutes later a neat cross sent by Marcos was nicely fisted out by Subhasish.
Mohun Bagan went ahead in the 9th minute. Getting a mispass in the midfield, Barreto ran with the ball and gave a terrific through pass towards Chidi who carried the ball from left wing into the box and delivered a low cross towards Sueoka who nicely flicked the ball inside the goal past helpless Subhasish.
In the 11th minute, Paresh took a good shot from outside the box which sailed over the crossbar. Mohun Bagan then made two good moves but headers from Barreto and Manju off Chidi and Snehasish's cross respectively went out of target.
Around the 20th minute, twice in 2 minutes, Rafi fell down quite easily in the Mohun Bagan box and appealed for penalty. Referee awarded a penalty to Mahindra from the second appeal, though it was a case of clear dive from Rafi as he failed to get past Dipak inside penalty box. In the first case, there could have been a penalty, but the second incident was in no way penalty. Even Biswajit echoed the same thought after the match. Rafi scored the equalizing goal from penalty in the 21st minute.
In the 32nd minute, Sueoka played a wall pass with Barreto and he was clearly tripped inside the box, but referee surprisingly turned a deaf ear to Mohun Bagan's appeal. Few minutes later, combination of both almost resulted in a goal. From Sueoka's pinpoint cross, Barreto's header went straight to Subhasish.
Mariners made a change in the 44th minute bringing on James in place of Manish who was a little out of form today. James went to right flank and Sueoka switched position to central medio. In the next attack, team got a penalty when from Chidi's final pass, Barreto was tripped by Subhasish inside the box as he tried to dribble past the latter. Chidi took the penalty and scored a brilliant goal by putting the ball in the top left corner. Regarding who will take the penalty, Biswajit said after match, "I asked either Marcos, Chidi or Manju to take the penalty and asked them to decide who will take the shot."
Bringing on James changed the complexion of the game and Mariners made quite a few moves down the right flank in the second half with Surkumar and James combining well.
In the 49th minute, Barreto made a down the middle run but his pass deflected off for corner. Manju's header went over from James corner.
Biswajit and Snehasish made a good move in the 55th minute and Biswajit's cross went a little far away, Barreto brilliantly reached the ball but no one was there inside the box to convert his pass into goal.
Mohun Bagan had a lucky escape in the 58th minute. Mijin's shot deflected off Biswajit, ballooned up and went out for corner. The corner curled over Shilton's head and was almost going towards goal, but Chidi was alert in the goalline and made a timely header to avert danger. In the next attack, Chidi took a rasping shot from edge of the box which was punched out by Subhasish.
Chidi was in superb form today and was rightly adjudged Man of the Match.
Chidi, however, missed an easy chance. Surkumar-James combination resulted in the latter sending a low cross towards Chidi who took a little time to take the shot and ultimately his effort got deflected off a defender for corner.
Barreto took two back-to-back shots at Mahindra goal, both lacked direction. The second time, he had got space in front of him and could have taken the ball inside the box before unleashing a shot.
Though Barreto was not in his usual form today, he contributed in two of the goals that Mohun Bagan scored. Biswajit said, "Barreto tried hard, but his performance against Air India was better than today. In fact, I think overall team performed much better in the last match, though today we won against a tough opponent, but there were still some mistakes which the players made, which I will have to rectify in the practice sessions."
Biswajit must have been modest, as beating Mahindra United by 3-1 is not an easy task by any means. This is the fourth win over Mahindra this year in fifth meeting, the other match ended in draw. One thing coach has done successfully is to nicely organize the defense lineup due to which team is defending well and has not conceded soft goals in the last few matches. Today also Dipak, Manju, Biswajit and Surkumar defended valiantly and did not give much space to the opponents inside their own box. The only goal of Mahindra today resulted from a poor refeering decision.
Mohun Bagan took a comprehensive 3-1 lead in the 67th minute. James-Surkumar combination which had been causing panic throughout the second half in Mahindra defence again created magic, as from Surkumar's cross Snehasish put the ball to back of the net. We have seen in practice sessions during situation practice, Snehasish scoring such goals from crosses sent from right side. Biswajit also said, "We have practiced such movements in practice sessions which resulted in the 3rd goal."
Mahindra then made double change and within minutes from Steven's curling free kick, Rafi's head was brilliantly saved by Shilton. This was one of the rare moments in the match when Steven did send a good pass, as he was heavily marked by Mariners today and Mohun Bagan players did not allow him to play his natural game.
Mohun Bagan made a fantastic move in the 85th minute. Again the move started from the right flank and went to Chidi, who gave a forward pass to Barreto. The latter took the ball inside box, dribbled past 1 player but then the ball got cleared. Barreto got slightly injured in the process and he was replaced by Micky in the 86th minute. Sueoka went to forward while Micky operated as attacking medio.
This changed worked nicely in favor of Mohun Bagan as Micky made two great runs and almost scored. Even coach was pleased with his performance and said that he should have brought in Micky few minutes earlier as his inclusion brought lot of thrust in the attack.
Biswajit made the last change in the injury time bringing on Tomba in favour of Sueoka. In the last minute, Rafi's header hit post.
Other than Chidi and Barreto, Sueoka continued with his good performance along with James and Surkumar. Dipak and Manju was rock solid in defence. Coach Biswajit said, "In the later part of 2nd half, there was little less snatching done by the midfielders and so I instructed Surkumar to move towards the center to stop the run of the Mahindra players."
Chidi was continously fouled by the Mahindra players throughout the match, especially Kalia and referee should have been much strict regarding these fouls.
Biswajit also gave credit to ex-coach Satyajit for this good performance. He said, "Full credit goes to Satyajit Chatterjee, he nicely shaped up the team, but he was unlucky and did not get good result. Overall, I am not very happy with team's performance although it was a great victory against a good team. There is still room for improvement."
Mohun Bagan tomorrow will have their practice session at 8 a.m. in the club ground. They will next play against East Bengal in Kolkata League on April 24th.
