DISMAL PERFORMANCE BY MOHUN BAGAN
Kolkata, 27-Mar, 2010: Mohun Bagan today went down 4-1 against Lajong FC in an I league home match played in Salt Lake Stadium.

This is indeed a shocking defeat at the hands of debutant I league team, Lajong FC. Mohun Bagan played an attacking football throughout the match and missed at least 12 easy chances to score and against run of play conceded 4 goals, out of which 2 were scored in the fag end of the match.

Today's match saw a disappointing performance from, otherwise dependable, Marcos and Japanese recruit, Sueoka. Lajong played cautious football and relied mainly on counter attack, and they scored all the four goals due to lack of proper snatching and blocking in Mohun Bagan midfield and also some defensive lapse.

Satyajit Chatterjee made two changes in the starting lineup from the last match. He brought James Singh and Azim in place of Ishfaq Ahmed and Rakesh Masih.

Mohun Bagan got the first chance in the 8th minute. Chidi headed the ball down for Barreto, who brilliantly scooped the ball towards Snehasish. The latter took the ball inside box but then shot wide from close range.

Against run of play, Lajong took the lead in the 11th minute. Azim made a mistimed tackle near midfield, ball went to Daniel who passed the ball towards Tuboi, the ball went towards the latter past Surkumar, who could have done better if he had made a first time tackle. Tuboi placed the ball inside goal.

In the 18th minute, Dipak sent a long ball for Snehasish from whom ball went to Sueoka. He sent a cross towards unmarked Chidi, but the latter blasted the ball over crossbar.

Manju was in poor from from start of the match as he made quite a few mistakes in the defence. In the 20th minute, from his back head, ball went to Tuboi. Dipak had no other option other than to tackle Tuboi outside the box. From free kick, Okoye scored the 2nd goal for Lajong. Thus Lajong went 2-0 up within 21 minutes.

Mohun Bagan could have scored one in the next minute. Barreto sent another good pass to Snehasish, who made a timely run, entered the box but instead of taking the shot himself, gave a back pass which was cleared by Lajong defence.

In the 25th minute, Satyajit had no other option but to replace Manju and brought in Biswajit Saha.

Barreto who tried a lot today gave two brilliant passes towards Chidi and Snehasish, but in both cases the players failed to trap the ball properly inside penalty box.

In the 34th minute, from Marcos corner, Barreto headed the ball towards Chidi, who came agonizingly close to scoring as his nicely attempted side volley just went over the bar.

Surkumar made few good runs from right flank, cut in and one of his shots was saved by goalkeeper. Ultimately, it was Surkumar who pulled one back in the 39th minute. Snehasish's corner was headed out by Lajong defence. Surkumar got the ball outside box, though his first touch was poor, but ultimately he unleashed a rasping shot that went to the back of the net.

Mohun Bagan missed two more chances before halftime. From Marcos' inch-perfect cross, Barreto's head went out. From James' corner, Sueoka could not direct his head into goal from very close range.

2 minutes after half time, Snehasish's corner hit the hand of a Lajong player. Though the Mohun Bagan players appealed for penalty, but referee turned a deaf ear. 2 minutes later, Surkumar's shot was saved by goalkeeper.

Lajong goalkeeper again came to the rescue when from Chidi's pass, Barreto headed the ball which was going inside goal, but goalkeeper made a stunning save by moving his body backwards to fist the ball out.

Mohun Bagan continued their domination and got a free kick in the 53rd minute. Marcos delivered a cross which was headed by Barreto, ball went to Chidi, whose effort beat goalkeeper and hit post.

In the next minute, Surkumar sent a long ball towards Barreto. Seeing the goalkeeper out of charge, Barreto lobbed the ball but the ball just went out.

In between, Chidi and Surkumar took few long distance shots but they either missed the target or was saved by goalkeeper.

Satyajit brought in Kuluthungan in place of James Singh in the 69th minute. Sueoka went to right half while Kulu paired with Marcos in central midfield. It would have been a better option to replace Sueoka, as James was playing well and delivered some good crosses from the flanks while this was perhaps Sueoka's worst match for Mohun Bagan. In the left flank, though Snehasish missed two easy chances, but he kept the Lajong defence on its toe by his darting run down the left flank.

From Surkumar's cross, Barreto headed the ball but it again went straight to goalkeeper.

Due to lack of good passes from central midfield, Barreto and Chidi was seen falling back to get the ball and they helped to build up some good moves, but this reduced the number of people in opponent box.

In the 71st minute, from Sueoka's cross, Barreto leaped up to head the ball but again goalkeeper made a good save.

Mohun Bagan made the last change as Ishfaq was brought in place of Sueoka in the 75th minute.

Mohun Bagan continued to dominate and also at the same time missing chances. In the 77th minute, from Chidi's pass, Barreto shot wide.

In another move where Snehasish made a good run, cut in, but instead of passing the ball to Barreto who was standing unmarked near the goal line, he chose the wrong option and passed the ball to Chidi who was heavily marked and before he could take the shot, it was cleared by Lajong defence.

In the 85th minute, from Snehasish's corner, Marcos fired a shot over bar from handshaking distance of the goalkeeper, thus another chance went begging.

In the 89th minute, Barreto unfortunately missed the easiest chance of the match. Snehasish sent a cross which found the head of Barreto. With the full goal open, he took a low head and goalkeeper had absolutely no problem to save the ball.

Adding to the woes of Mariners, in the injury time, Lajong scored two more goals. In the 92nd minute, Gatpoh dribbled past 3 players and put the ball to the back of the net. In the last minute, Anil Gurung made the scoreline 4-1 in favour of Lajong.

Mohun Bagan played well, created chances, missed numerous goal scoring opportunities, and ultimately due to proper blocking in midfield and defensive error conceded 4 goals and suffered a shocking defeat in the hands of Lajong FC.

After match, coach Satyajit said, "I have never seen any team missing so many chances. We conceded the last two goals due to fatigue. I think we did not have good preseason camping this year due to which we are facing the problem now. Plus there was no physio in the team from start of the season."
