MARINERS SUFFER SHOCK DEFEAT TO SPORTING CLUBE DE GOA

Mohun Bagan today suffered a shocking 2-1 defeat at the hands of Sporting Clube de Goa in a home match played at Salt Lake Stadium. Barreto scored the only goal for the home team.
After this defeat, Mohun Bagan now has 25 points from 17 matches and are 7 points behind the league leaders Dempo. With 9 matches remaining, winning the I league for Mohun Bagan seems like a tough proposition at the present moment.
Satyajit Chatterjee made no change in the starting lineup from the last match against JCT. In the last match, the strategy of putting Ishfaq in the right flank almost worked as team played well and created a number of chances to score, but today this strategy backfired and Ishfaq had to be substituted after 45 minutes.
Overall performance of Mohun Bagan was not good today and though Barreto and Chidi tried a lot, they did not get enough support from midfield.
Mohun Bagan started the match on a bright note and took the lead in the 12th minute. Snehasish made a stupendous run down the left flank and from his cross, Barreto's shot from edge of box went to the back of the net. This was a clinical finish from the Brazilian, and his shot had enough power which left the goalkeeper stranded in the goalline.
Mariners continued their domination. Chidi made few good attempts which were blocked by Sporting defence. In the 18th minute, getting a ball from Snehasish, Chidi took a rasping shot from left flank which beat goalkeeper but clipped the post and went out.
In the 21st minute, from Barreto's cross, Chidi failed to trap the ball properly, though the attempt was praiseworthy.
Chidi then missed a golden chance to score in the 28th minute. Barreto's down the middle run ended with a pass towards Manju in the left from whose cross, Chidi completely miscued the shot. He was well placed inside the box and was in an advantageous position to score.
Sangram made a very good save in the 31st minute when he prevented Joseph Perreira's shot from going in, diving to his left. However, the visitors equalized in the next minute. From corner, Adil Khan scored via a side volley. He was left unmarked and got enough time to position himself and take the shot.
Sporting started controlling the game from there on and made few good moves, but Dipak had an outstanding game today and made 2 great tackles to avert danger.
Just before half time, Ishfaq gave a mispass which went to Junior near the center circle. He ran with the ball but his shot from outside the box went out. This was a lucky escape for Mohun Bagan.
Satyajit brought James in place of Ishfaq in the 46th minute. In the next minute, Barreto released the ball towards James in the line who delivered a cross, both Barreto and Chidi leaped up to head the ball, but the ball went out after hitting Barreto's head.
Mohun Bagan played slightly better football in the 2nd half but could not break the resistance of Sporting defence and goalkeeper.
Surkumar made few darting diagonal runs and combined well with James in the right flank but all the crosses were nicely collected by goalkeeper.
From counter attack, Mohun Bagan conceded a soft goal in the 70th minute. The whole defence except Rakesh went up to play the offside trap, ball went to Amos, he ran past Rakesh, who had made an error of judgment of not going up to lay the offside trap, and sent a low cross towards Junior. The latter took a low header to put the ball inside goal making the scoreline 2-1 in favour of the Goan team.
Satyajit brought in Kuluthungan and Branco in place of Manju and Rakesh and went to 3-5-2 formation. This helped Mohun Bagan to put more pressure on Sporting goal.
Mariners took few shots at goal. One attempt of Barreto was nicely intercepted by defence inside box and Chidi's effort was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper diving full stretched. Chidi also came close to scoring when from James cross, goalkeeper failed to collect the ball but Chidi's shot was cleared from goalline by a Sporting defender.
Sporting defence well played well and did not allow Mohun Bagan players any space inside their penalty box and ultimately managed to register their 1st win in this edition of I league.
After the match, coach Satyajit looked very upset but said, "Still we have a outside chance to win the league. There is always pressure on big teams like Mohun Bagan. Today was a day when everything went wrong for us. I take the full responsibility for this defeat."
Mohun Bagan will next play against Lajong F.C. next Saturday i.e. March 27th in Salt Lake Stadium.
