Born on 1st September 1923 Sailen Manna, the living legend in Indian football, got 'Footballer of the Millenium' award. For the first AIFF honoured a footballer like great Sailen Manna, considered the best full back after Gostha Paul, Sailen Manna also beame the first 'Padmasree' award winner after Chinise wall Gostha Paul. He joined MohunBagan club from Howrah Union in 1943 and playing after consecutive 18 years, retired in 1960. He represented Indian national team in 1948 London Olympics and 1052 Helsinki Olympic games. In Helsinki he became the captain of the Indian team. More importantly, he captained the Indian team that won the first Asian games football Gold medal in 1951 held in Delhi. He also represented the country in 1954 Manila Asian games. Captained the Indian Goodwill Mission tour team to Russia and Far Eastern countries. He also captained MohunBagan team from 1950 to 1955 and also led the Bengal team in Santosh trophy. Still out and out belongs to MohunBagan, Sailen Manna also served as Football Secretary and Assistant General Secretary of MohunBagan.
