Chuni, surely the most popular and glamorous Indian footballer off his time and probably for all the time. When he was in his prime, a new car, FIAT, came in the market. It was learnt that then East Bengal's General Secretary Mr.Jyotish Chandra Guha was so eager to sign Chuni to EastBengal club that at one stage he even had offered him a key of FIAT car. But inspite of Mr.Jyotish Guha's desperate try, he turned down his offer. Yes, Chuni had started and also ended his football career at the same club and that is MohunBagan. Indian football team won the Gold medal in 1962 Djakarta Asian games under the leadership of Chuni. He also Captained the Indian side in 1964 Pre Olympic football but ultimately did not qualify for the Olympic proper by losing to Ian at Rabindra Sarobar Stadium. He also represented India in 1958 Tokyo Asiad and 1960 Rome Olympic. The third 'Arjuna' (1963, first from MohunBagan), and also third 'Padmasree' (1984) award winner Is the loan man to become the Captain of Bengal team both in the National football Santosh Trophy and National Ranji Trophy final.
He started his football career from teen age. The first match he played for MohunBagan in 1954 when he was just 16. Since then toppling one after another steps, he became one of the finest Inside forwards in India. His name also reached far corner of the Middle East and Far East. He also played for Calcutta University and captained so many times. Also toured with the All India football team in his early career. He played the last match for MohunBagan in 1968. In these successive 15 years span he captained the MohunBagan side for consecutive 5 years from 1960 to 1964, also became the Captain of Bengal team in Santosh trophy. Under his leadership, Bengal reached the final of Ranji trophy cricket in 1971-72 but lost Mumbai. He also did the duty of Assistant Secretary, General Secretary, Football Secretary for MohunBagan. Also became the First Director of Tata Football Academy.
