Mohun Bagan Icons - Abholash Ghosh

The famous "Black Devil" of Mohn Bagan, as he was famous within the British teams. The ace striker of 1911 I.F.A Shield winning team scored the decisive goal in the final. Born in Maimansingh district of undivided Bengal in 1892, he started playing football at Pandit Para at his home town. He completed his schooling at the City School in Maimansingh, and then came to Kolkata and admitted to Scottish Church College. Here during the college life at Kolkata, he became a friend of Rajen Sen, who has taken him in Mohun Bagan.

He played Hockey too, but in Grear Sporting Club. He was also associated with the "Calcutta Referees Association". His brother was the famous sports official Kopi Babu, who had served both Mohun Bagan and East Bengal clubs. Apart from his sports career, Abhilash Ghosh was a high ranking officer in Broke Bond Industries. He was the captain of Mohun Bagan during1917-18 and again in 1920.

In winter of 1954, he fall very sick after the operation of Gastric Ulcer. There was a need for a huge quantity of blood. There was a huge turnout in terms of blood donors from the sports world of Kolkata. But despite of the best effort, he passed away in 3rd January 1955, left behind his 90 years old mother, wife and two daughters.
